My philosophy to flight instructing
I strive to make each student a safe and competent pilot keeping two things in mind during training:
- Achieve your goal (checkride usually) in the most efficient manner
- Trust you to fly my family members.
Two-decade history of training
I have taught hundreds of submariners operating nuclear power plants at sea since the mid-2000s, including:
- Served as qualifying officer of all individuals in the reactor plant
- Developed and managed an intricate continuing training program for recurring certification
- Individually trained dozens of officers and junior Sailors in reactor plant operations
- Served as a member of the Navy & Dept of Energy's nuclear propulsion examining team certifying subs and aircraft carriers
Expectations of Me
You must be a demanding customer & get your “money's worth” in achieving a challenging and worthwhile goal. As such, I will:
-
Use a syllabus
- A roadmap as we “begin with the end in mind
- You will always know what is coming next
- Arrive prepared and on time
- Commit to a schedule that allows for frequent, continuing training
- Give you feedback on each lesson — and make it available
- Be professional and treat you with respect
- Not engage in distractions — no cell phone use
- Tell you when “I don’t know” — and I’ll find out!
- Stay up to date on regulations and requirements
How to Start
- Let’s meet with no obligation to make sure we're a good fit. I want to learn about your:
- Background
- Motivation
- Learning Style
- Availability
- Aircraft & Location
- Location: Monterey, CA; able to drive the South Bay area
- Local Flight School or Flying Club — I need to sign on as a CFI with the organization
- Your Access — We can use your aircaft as long as the maintenance records support
- Intro Flight
- Explore a flight itinerary with your input
- Determine if you want to continue flying
- Determine if we're a good instructor/learner match
