The purpose of this is to add or link to some unique aspects of VFR flying.

I have little new stuff to offer here — I point to other worthy teachers!

Stick & Rudder Skills

Things I think a competent pilot should be good at

  • Airspeed Perfection in Pattern (± 2 kts on each leg)
  • Spot Landings (without power)
  • Lindbergh Reference Flying
    • Fly your pitch, roll, and yaw perfectly just looking out a small slice of the winshield (See description here)
  • Flight at minimum controllable airspeed
  • Intentional Slips and recovery
  • Detailed knowledge of slips vs skids and spins

Other Cool Stuff

3D Airspace in Google Maps

I like to get creative on Google Maps with a bit of computer programming that provides rich imagery

Files and Images

  • The links below give you "snapshot" images of the airspace
  • The .kml files are fully interactive in Google Earth
    • Turn on individual "rings" or layers
    • Turn on/off underlying landmarks
    • Select which points to display
    • "Fly" through and beneath the layers to see how the airspace works
NOTE: kml files work only in Google Earth Pro or Google Earth Mobile — not the web version!

All points, landmarks, radii, and geometry of the airspace is defined in FAA Order JO 7400.11

  • These are NOT verified — don't use for legal purposes!
